The booming tech industry has yielded a crop of new collectors who favor younger new-media artists, as well as those bridging utilitarian design with sculptural aesthetics. Operating in San Francisco, less than an hour from Silicon Valley, FOG Design+Art fair capitalizes on the rising interest in art and design collecting across Northern California with its seventh edition, which opens at Fort Mason Art and Culture Center on January 16 for a four-day run. San Francisco’s FOG Design+Art returns to the Fort Mason Center for the eighth edition of the fair. The week kicks off with a preview gala on January 19 that benefits the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art’s (SFMOMA) education and exhibition program before welcoming visitors into the halls to see presentations by an international roster of more than 45 galleries. The stand is a solo presentation of works by Laurie Reid, pairing her paintings—which feature arrays of dilapidated colour fields—alongside the first presentation of her jewellery. The exhibition in the gallery’s offsite exhibition space features work by artists Ambreen Butt, Chitra Ganesh and Eva Schlegel contemplating how contemporary concerns like political instability, climate change and economic inequality control us now much in the way the fates were believed to. The unstoppable rise of ceramics continues at East Village tastemaker Karma’s booth, where a star of the recent Art Basel Miami Beach, Woody de Othello, shows his flamboyant sculpture, Mussed (2018), a modestly scaled piece in comparison to his usual renditions of oozing telephones, typewriters, and air conditioners.
FOG FOCUS will feature nine exhibitors as well as art installations, activations, and performances in Fort Mason Center’s Pier 2 building. A West Coast blue-chip gallery with a New York outpost, Blum & Poe also reserves its booth for a Japanese artist who borrows cues from craft and utilitarian objects. Indeed, it required highly advanced techniques to process the 54 meter-long plate of steel used as the roof. This project would not have succeeded without the skills and techniques offered by all the craftsmen involved in its construction. People on the site bravely tackled the difficulties inherent in accommodating the requirements of the design without any compromise. I hope it will act as a center to inspire even higher levels of designs and spread them around the world. And of course, facilities will not be serving their purposes without the people who come and use them. I hope that more and more young people will visit here, experience design and inspire themselves so that they will contribute to raise the level of Japanese culture in the future.

Despite seventy percent of the building being located below ground level, a large lightwell lets in natural light. In 2001, Tokyo Midtown began its transformation when Mitsui Fudosan and its partners acquired the former Japan Defense Agency site, focusing on “Design” as its core theme. Influenced by Issey Miyake’s 2003 article advocating for a Japanese design museum, a concept he had shared with Tadao Ando since the 1980s, the project evolved to an interactive space for public engagement in design culture. This evolution led to the opening of 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT in March 2007, a significant addition to Tokyo’s cultural scene. Set on the edge of Midtown Garden, which is located in the Tokyo Midtown complex, a large portion of the gallery space is underground.

While the café and museum function independently, their entrances face each other at grade. Diners are greeted by the café’s open kitchen and tables oriented toward the parklike setting.
